Maruti Suzuki is gearing up for the launch of the highly anticipated next-generation Swift hatchback in India, which is expected to hit Indian markets in May. This new generation Swift is already available in some international markets and has recently undergone crash tests by Japan NCAP, scoring an impressive 4-star safety rating.
Crash Test Results
In addition to crash tests, the new Swift also excelled in various safety assessments by Japan NCAP, earning 5 stars for autonomous driver assistance features and achieving good scores in frontal impact, off-set frontal impact, and side collision tests, among others. With an overall score of 4 stars and 117.80 out of 197 points, the international version of the Swift truly demonstrates its commitment to safety in the Japan NCAP.
During the tests, the airbags deployed at the right moment in all the crashes. When they impacted the side, both the front and curtain airbags deployed as well. This test differs from those conducted by Bharat NCAP or Global NCAP. However, it appears that Suzuki has significantly strengthened the car now, indicating potential success in the Bharat NCAP crash tests too. Despite severe damage to the front of the car in these tests, the body pillars remained sturdy and did not break or bend.
Design Upgrades
When it comes to India, some features, including ADAS, automatic parking brakes with auto hold function, and a wireless phone charger, will be omitted. Yet, Indian buyers can still expect a new exterior design with a new gloss-black rounded grille, sharper LED headlamps, conventional rear door handles, newly designed front and rear bumpers, and blacked-out C-pillars. Inside, the new Swift will feature a completely new dual-tone dashboard, with a Baleno-like floating touchscreen infotainment system in the center console.
Engine Specifications
Under the hood, the new Swift will feature a new Z-Series 1.2-liter, 3-cylinder petrol engine tuned for improved efficiency and performance in the city. This engine is equipped with a 12V mild-hybrid system generating 82PS of power and 112 Nm of torque. It will be available with either a 5-speed manual or automatic transmission. Unofficial bookings for the new generation Swift have already started at selected Maruti dealerships.
